Since I’ve realized that being over 50 is now the new over 40, I’ve started to look at ways to make the most out of my backyard treasures – places I can visit in my own city. Ottawa has lots to offer, including several new hotels and restaurants, as well as many great activities and attractions for the whole family to enjoy. After Canada’s 150th anniversary, it seemed that we had fallen off the face of the earth. I’ve decided to document my activities, nights out, and hotel stays to help you understand all that Ottawa has to offer.
There is plenty to do in this beautiful city, and it’s up to you to discover it. Enjoy a night’s stay at the freshly renovated Embassy Suites, located in the heart of downtown Ottawa, just steps away from some of the best restaurants in Ottawa. Experience famous attractions like the National Art Centre, a haunted walk, strolling alongside the Rideau Canal or witnessing the Northern Light show on Parliament Hill. Embassy Suites has meeting space, a restaurant, extra-large long-term suites for your added comfort, and so much more. Each room has a private balcony with a view of the city.
Cooper’s Gastropub is nestled alongside the building and close to the street. This patio is ideal for people watchers, solo travellers and passerby’s who are all welcome to enjoy the terrace. Choose to start your morning with breakfast on the patio, and you’ll have the beautiful sun beaming on you. As the day goes by, the shaded patio becomes a sought-after area. Cooper’s Gastropub has an excellent menu that caters to everyone’s taste buds. If the weather is not great outside, then their dining room is ready to receive guests. Here you will find a well-decorated hall, cool lighting, and a colourful and comfortable atmosphere. The wooded top bar area is my favourite place to enjoy an adult beverage. A burger and brew at Cooper’s Gastropub is the perfect way to end the day.
As mentioned above, the Embassy Suites recently underwent a makeover and is looking better than ever. The suite I booked was perfect for long-term guests, or for the whole family. There is ample room for guests, a fully equipped kitchenette, a large bathroom, and a beautiful balcony on which to enjoy views of the city and a little outdoor time.
The newly renovated hotel offers you:
- 130 beautifully appointed suites ranging from 450 to 900 square feet
- Complimentary high-speed Internet
- Parking (Surcharge)
- Cooper’s Gastropub Casual Dining
- Fitness center
- Diplomat Room for on-site meetings (Surcharge)
- Laundry facility (Coin Operated)
No matter the season, when you stay at Embassy Suites in downtown Ottawa, there are many year-round activities for you to enjoy. This includes a haunted walk, discovering Ottawa with your camera, double-decker bus tours, shopping, the National Art Center, and exploring Sparks Street. All of these activities are located less than a 10-minute walk from the hotel.
Discovering Ottawa with your camera is one of the best ways to see the city while learning how to utilize your camera. You will learn a bit about the history of the Notre Dame Basilica, and the fire at Parliament Hill (the only building that survived the fire was the library). I will teach you new angles, how to create illusions, and so much more. Yes, I lead these photography tours. It was something that I noticed it was missing in downtown Ottawa. Last summer, I decided to offer this activity to the public. It’s been incredible to accompany other photographers around Ottawa and teach them my knowledge of photography.
Culinary experiences in Ottawa have changed over the last 5 years. Ottawa has several adventurous business owners opening restaurants and food trucks in several locations. It’s so impressive to witness!
A blend of Asian cuisine with a twist, seafood (Happy Fish) and oyster shucking, a top steak house, and so much more, Ottawa has it all. The food scene is thriving in Ottawa, and the Embassy Suites holds its own with Cooper’s Gastropub (click for dinner menu). They have a team of culinary experts ready to create for you. From freshly prepared salads, a 5-napkin burger, and braised Ontario lamb shanks, to smoky elk and pulled pork meatloaf, Cooper’s Gastropub has something to satisfy every taste bud. Open daily for breakfast till late evening.
